Early Literacy

Talk, Sing, Read, Write and Play!

In five easy steps you can help your children get ready to read!

TALKING

Children learn language skills by listening to their parents and those around them. When children hear spoken language they learn new words and what they mean. Make sure you give you children plenty of opportunities to speak and learn new words. This can be done easily by asking questions, talking while you play, and narrating what you are doing throughout the day.

SINGING

Singing slows down words and makes it easier for children to hear the parts that make up the word.  This will help them when they start to learn how to decode words. Reciting rhymes, poems, and chants has the same positive impact on children.

READING

Reading together is one of the most important ways to get your child ready to read.  Shared reading increases vocabulary, general knowledge, helps children become familiar with how books work, and helps children develop an interest in reading and a love of books.

WRITING

Reading and writing go together. Scribbling and drawing are some of the first steps towards writing. By using art supplies children are able to work on their fine motor skills which will help them when they learn to write.

PLAYING

Playing helps children to develop language skills and learn about the world around them. Imaginative play, putting thoughts into words, and creating stories help children learn about language.
